GIUSEPPE MARANIELLO

Giuseppe Maraniello was born in Naples in 1945. After studying art, he began to teach at the secondary school of art. In 1971 he moved to Milan, meeting L. Inga Pin, and haunted his gallery, where he would then exhibit his works. After his personal exhibitions at some private galleries, his works were displayed in several collective exhibitions in public spaces, such as L’estetico e il Selvaggio at Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna, Modena, 1979 , Italiana Nuova Immagine at Loggetta Lombardesca, Ravenna, 1980, and Dieci anni dopo i nuovi nuovi at Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna, 1980. In 1982, he took part in Arte Italiana 1960-1982 at the London’s Hayward Gallery in 1982. G. Dorfles asked him to present a major public project during the happening-exhibition Intorno al flauto magico at La Scala Theatre, Palazzo della Permanente, Milan, 1985. In 1989 he was appointed full professor of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts,
in 1991 he moved to the Brera Academy in Milan, where he taught until 2003. In 1990, he had a personal exhibition hall in the XLIV Venice Biennale, with an introduction by L. Vergine in the catalogue. In the same year, his works were exhibited at the Virreina Palace in Barcelona, at the Crystal Palace in Madrid and at Mathildenhohe Darmstadt (L’altra scultura curated by R. Barilli). His works were included in the travelling exhibition Cadenze, figure dell’arte italiana degli anni ’90, curated by P.G. Castagnoli which in 1992 was hosted by some South American institutes, such as the Sofia Imber in Caracas
and the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota. In 1993, the Galleria Civica of Trento and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Bologna – Villa delle Rose held a broad retrospective exhibition of his works. The gardens of Centro S. Chiara in Trento would become the permanent venue for one of his bigger sculptures. One year later, he took part in the exhibition, L’incanto e la trascendenza at Castel Ivano, Ivano Fracena, Trento, curated by D. Eccher, while in 1995 one of his big installations floated on the waters of Venice on the occasion of Artelaguna, curated by S. Gorreri and sponsored by the Venice Biennale. In 1997, he took part in the exhibition Arte Italiana – Materiali Anomali curated by D. Eccher and D. Auregli at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna, which since 1996 has permanently hosted one of his sculptures in its gardens. L. Vergine invited him to take part in the exhibition Trash. Quando i rifiuti diventano Arte, 1998,
at Palazzo delle Albere, in Trento, and Archivio del Novecento, in Rovereto. The three floors of Galleria Giò Marconi became home to a major exhibition of his works in Milan in 1998 (this is the video), the year he exhibited his works with Luigi Mainolfi at Centro Arti Visive Pescheria
in Pesaro as well.Between 1996 and 2000, he made several permanent sculptures for public places, such as a monument to seamen for the port of Molfetta, a sculpture for the district penitentiary of Le Vallette in Turin, and one for the Traffic Control Authority in Rome. In 2000, his works were on display at Galleria Fumagalli in Bergamo and Marconi in Milan (Boomerang). In 2001, he and A. Pomodoro worked at a sculpture for the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee, WI, USA. Large retrospective exhibitions of his works were held in 2001 at Fortezza Firmafede, Sarzana, curated by Galleria Cardelli & Fontana, and in 2002 at the Rocca Sforzesca in Imola, curated by M. Zattini. In 2004, his works were exhibited
in Rome, at Casa Musumeci Greco, and at the same time at Spazio Volume. A few months later, his works were on display at the Levy Gallery in Hamburg. In the same year, the Municipality of Ischia held a broad retrospective exhibition of his works at Torre Guevara, followed by an important permanent installation in the Negombo Park. Also in 2004, he developed and designed the cover for the book in tribute to Mario Luzi's 80th birthday.
He worked with some other poets, such as D. Butor and E. Sanguineti. In addition, he and Luzi produced the book, Fiore nostro fiorisci ancora” published by Canopo of Prato. In the same year, L, Vergine, G. Verzotti and J.H. Martin invited him to take part in the exhibition Il bello e le bestie at Mart in Rovereto. In 2005, Galleria Flora Bigai held a personal retrospective exhibition of his works on its three floors. Also in 2005, he exhibited his works at Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro for Scultura italiana del XX secolo.
In 2006, his personal exhibition was the first one to be held at Galleria Civica of Arco di Trento, curated by G. Nicoletti. In 2007, he designed a cover for F.M.R., for the book Credo, published by F.M.R. ART’È. In 2007, he took part in the collective exhibition Les fleurs du mal, curated by D. Eccher at Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Sannio ARCOS in Benevento. In 2008, he won the Guglielmo Marconi 2008 Award for painting, sculpture and electronic art, promoted by the University of Bologna, Fondazione Guglielmo Marconi. In the same year, his 13-metre-tall bronze sculpture was exhibited in Piazzetta della Croce Rossa in Milan for Miraggi a MiArt”curated by the Municipality of Milan. His bronze sculpture is exhibited in the hall of the new Bocconi University curated
by Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Milan. In 2009, he installed a 24-metre-tall permanent public sculpture in Piazza dei Poeti, in Terni. In 2009 he preparted a large anthology entitled Il gatto dorme rotondo in the Boboli Gardens in Florence.
In 2010, the Gallery Flora Bigai di Pietrasanta dedicated a solo exhibition entitled Il gambo dei fiori. In 2011 he took part in the exhibition Dalla Figura alla Figurazione - nel Novecento italiano, curated by S. Cecchetto, at Palazzo Loredan, in Venice. In 2012 a personal exibition at Gallery Lorenzelli entitled "IN-ES", curated by A. Fiz, with a testimony of A. Tecce, Milan. In the same year, his work is on permanent display at the Museum "Cantiere del 900 - Opere dalle collezioni Intesa Sanpaolo, curated by F. Tedeschi, at Gallerie d'Italia, in Milan. In 2013 a large sculpture is located at the entrance to the Mario Negri Institute, Milan. In 2014, installs in Saint Thomas Chapel, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA a life-size bronze Crucifix, behind the altar.
